Hoover Dam
After we left Vegas behind, we visited a marvel of
engineering, the Hoover Dam, which was built in the 1930s to dam the Colorado
River. The scale of the dam is truly staggering. The two sides of the dam are
in different states (Nevada and Arizona) – and in winter, different time zones!
Building the Dam provided work for thousands of people during the Great
Depression, but as its construction was so hazardous sadly many lost their
lives. Many people were visiting the Dam the day we were there, probably
because the nearest national recreation area, Lake Mead, was closed (!) due to
the US Govt shutdown...
